Alex Fergus is a wellness coach whose goal is to get people back on track towards living a healthy lifestyle. He strongly advocates the importance of sleep and how people should prioritize recovery over training days. He cites sleep is one of the foundation of what makes a healthy lifestyle work, especially since sleep helps boost the body’s overall functions such as muscle growth and even fat burning.

Today, Alex will tell us all about his fitness program, how to improve sleep with morning sunlight, and tell us what exactly happens when we lose even 2-3 nights of sleep.

"Just think about how good you'll feel after a really good night's sleep.” Alex Fergus

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Jetlag is due to the misaligned circadian rhythm and your body is confused.
  • Hunger is even triggered, when it shouldn’t be, when you’re someplace with an extremely different temperature.
  • Most people experience a mild form of jetlag every day. You simply have to stay up late and avoid getting outside every day to induce it.
  • If your goal is fat loss, fix your sleep first. Sleep deprivation reduces your body's ability to properly metabolize fat and sugar.
  • Getting up so early, and purposely disrupting sleep, for training is more negative than you think. It also promotes hunger which is something the body’s not supposed to do if you’re goal is to lose weight.
  • Lack of sleep, such as sleeping for only 5-6 hours, will increase cortisol chronically which is one of the worst things you can do to your health.
  • Too much cortisol leads to loss of testosterone and will have a domino effect on your health. This can happen in as little as 2-3 bad nights of sleep.

Key Takeaways:

  • The best things about sleep is it’s both powerful and free.
  • Getting up 15 minutes earlier to see the sun is going to pay off in the long term. Even if your sleep isn't terrible, it's important to keep that natural cycle of hormones in your transmitters, for general health and wellness.
